How can smart meters benefit you?

Accurate readings

Your Smart meter automatically sends accurate readings to your supplier monthly, daily or hourly, depending on your preference. No more manual reads, no more estimated bills, you will only pay for energy you have used.

More energy tariff options

More tariffs may be available to you including Time-of-use and electric vehicle tariffs, which can reduce your bill when you use the cheaper energy and renewable energy when available. These are only accessible to those with smart meters as suppliers need frequent automatic readings to accurately charge you. 

Understanding energy usage

Your In Home Display Unit (IHD) clearly shows how much energy you're using at any given time either in usage (kWh) or pounds and pence. This can also help you find which devices are using the most energy.

How do I get a smart meter?

The first step to get a Smart meter is to contact your energy supplier to book an appointment.    You can book an appointment with your supplier by clicking the link below to get to your energy supplier’s smart meter request page.   If you have already requested a Smart meter from your supplier but are still having difficulties getting one, please fill in our Smart meter form and we will try to help.

FAQs

Will a smart meter work if my home has poor mobile signal? 

Due to the limited mobile network coverage in some areas and the demand for smart meters here on Scilly the mesh network could be the solution.

The mesh system uses connections to nearby smart meters that do have stable connections to the WAN (Wider Area Network) to boost the signal of other smart meters that don't have a network connection. The more smart meters are on Scilly the more likely the mesh network is going to work. More local network solutions like these are in development but cannot be confirmed yet. 

RTS and DTS Switch-Off 

The big switch-off of the BBC radio service that runs RTS (Radio Teleswitch) and DTS (Dynamically teleswitched) meters is set to be complete by March 2025. If you still have one of these types of meters we strongly recommend replacing it with help from your supplier. You can usually find out if you have an RTS meter by looking for a separate switch box next to your meter, which will have a Radio Teleswitch Service label on it. There is much speculation regarding what may happen to your energy if you don't get an RTS/DTS meter replaced before the cut-off period but there is a definite risk of unexpected bills. If you have a meter with economy 7 that switches your heating and/or hot water on during off-peak periods some of these may stop when the RTS/DTS network is switched off. The E7 tariff is still available with replacement meters along with additional tariffs depending on your supplier. To learn more visit the links provided below.
